Improving your smile...
It is becoming more acceptable and effective to invest in your appearance. After all, in an ageing society, why not look good for longer? Cosmetic dentistry can be used to straighten, lighten, repair and reshape teeth.
At Aspire Dental we offer a range of cosmetic and more advanced treatments to help you to improve your smile:
Tooth whiteningIf your teeth have become discoloured over time, there are now ways to reverse this effect. Many Hollywood actors and actresses choose to lighten their teeth to improve their smile.
Tooth whitening can lighten your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface.
The most common method of tooth whitening is professional bleaching, where a tray is made to fit around your teeth like a gum shield and the whitening product is left to work. As oxygen gets into the enamel on your teeth, the active ingredient reacts and makes the teeth lighter in colour. The total treatment can usually be done within three to four weeks, and you will need to wear the shield at home. Most patients find that the trays can be worn quite comfortably overnight.
Power whitening, can also be used to speed up the bleaching process. A rubber dam will protect your gums and a bleaching product will be painted onto your teeth. Then a light will be shone onto your teeth to quicken the chemical reaction. Often, teeth are up to five or six shades lighter within one hour!
Veneers
Veneers can be used to improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. They can instantly improve your smile by hiding discolouration, closing small gaps and repairing chips and cracks. A veneer is a thin slice of porcelain, or a tooth-coloured composite, made to be bonded and fitted precisely over the front surface of a tooth - much like a false fingernail on a nail.
Very little preparation of the tooth is needed. Your dentist will match the shade of your natural teeth and take an impression of the tooth. This will usually be sent to a laboratory where a dental technician will create your porcelain veneer. If you opt for a composite veneer, it can normally be fitted in one visit using the same material used for tooth-coloured fillings. Composite veneers are more prone to discolouration over time, however replacements are easily made.
Veneers can make teeth look natural and healthy, and should last for many years.

OrthodonticsOrthodontics is a specialist form of dentistry which aims to straighten the teeth to produce a healthier bite. Although more and more adults are having braces, the majority of patients are in their teens.
Having braces doesn't mean the end of your social life. With more and more people having braces, you won't be the odd one.
Fixed braces are often referred to as 'train track' braces. The orthodontist attaches metal or tooth-coloured brackets - small blocks - to the teeth and then runs a special wire over the brackets to pull the teeth into the right position. Because the brackets are stuck to the teeth, you won't be able to take the brace off during your treatment.
When treatment is finished, the teeth need to be held in position for a time, otherwise they may drift back into their original position. This is done using a retainer. The retainers hold newly straightened teeth in position while the surrounding gum and bone settles. They can be removable or fixed depending on the original problem.
